Translational Breast Cancer Research Unit
The goal of the BCAC Translational Breast Cancer Research Unit (TBCRU), formally the Pamela Greenaway-Kohlmeier Translational Cancer Research Unit at London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) is to foster translational, patient-centred breast cancer research in multiple disciplines, throughout London, Ontario. Under Dr. Alison Allan's leadership, the TBCRU supports research specificially focused on the understanding, prevention, tracking and/or treatment of metastasis, the deadliest aspect of breast cancer.
A partnership that began in 1998, between the BSSC and LRCP was born in honour of Pamela Greenway-Kohlmeier who passed away from breast cancer at 38 years old. The unit provides world-class research and has led the way in translational research to benefit patients as well as provide training to the next generation of translational researchers.
The BCSC provides valuable support for four major programs through the TBCRU:
A. Translational Breast Cancer Research Traineeship Program B. Senior Breast Cancer Research Scientist Program C. Translational Breast Cancer Research Catalyst Grant ProgramD. Translational Breast Cancer Equipment Fund
2020-2021 Breast Cancer Society of Canada Graduate Student Scholarship Recipients and their Research Projects.
In September of 2020, the TBCRU announced 15 new BCSC graduate student scholarship recipients for the 2020-2021 academic year. Seven MSc students, seven PhD students and one postdoctoral fellow were selected for awards this year. These trainees are enrolled in four different departments/programs at Western University (Anatomy & Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Medical Biophysics and Pathology & Laboratory Medicine). The trainees are working in research laboratories located across the city of London; at the London Regional Cancer Program, St. Joseph's Health Care London, Robarts Research Institute, and Western University. Their translational research projects are broadly focused on the understanding, prevention, tracking and/or treatment of metastatic breast cancer, the deadliest aspect of breast cancer.
